Math Major Tracks in Earlier Catalogs

Mathematics is one of the oldest academic disciplines, valued for its intrinsic beauty, as training in logical and analytical reasoning, and for its widespread applications throughout other disciplines. As our society adopts more technology and collects more data, training in mathematics becomes ever more valuable.

The B.S. in Mathematics was rearranged into four tracks as of the 2018-2019 catalog; even the two tracks with the same names as before have been revised.

Math Major Tracks before Catalog Year 2018-2019

In order to continue one of the oldest liberal arts traditions and tomeet the challenges of an increasingly technical world, the Department ofMathematics at the College of Charleston offers a variety of programs for themathematics major beyond the essential core curriculum. We presently offer five different undergraduate degree options and several graduate programs.

Track in Pure Mathematics

This program is primarily intended for the major who will attend graduate school in mathematics. However, the quantitative and analytical skills, which the pure mathematics program develop, serve as valuable assets for those preparing to enter the work force directly after graduation. To get a degree in pure mathematics at the College of Charleston, you will need to fulfill the requirements set forth in any one of the course catalogs that appears while you are in attendance:

Track in Applied Mathematics

This program is for the major who intends to work in business, industry, or government upon graduation as well as many students who will attend graduate school. In order to work as an applied mathematician, it is necessary to be able to apply mathematical knowledge to another subject. Hence, each student selecting the applied mathematics program must design an area of application. To get a degree in applied mathematics at the College of Charleston, you will need to fulfill the requirements set forth in any one of the course catalogs that appears while you are in attendance:

Track in Actuarial Mathematics

Long considered to be one of the most desirable careers available, the job of an actuary requires a throrough background in probability theory. To get adegree in actuarial mathematics at the College of Charleston, you will need to fulfill the requirements set forth in any one of the course catalogs that appears while you are in attendance:

Track in Statistics

Because of the importance of collecting and analysing data in just about every human activity, statisticians can find employment in medicine, environmental science, industry, government, business, etc. To major in mathematics with a degree from the statistics at the College of Charleston, you will need to fulfill the requirements set forth in any one of the course catalogs that appears while you are in attendance:

The Teaching Program

This program is for the prospective secondary school mathematics teacher, and is primarily housed in the School of Education, Health, and Human Performance. The current requirements are described in the Math (9-12) teacher education program worksheet
