Registration Policy
For Students Unable to Register Themselves due to Full Sections, Missing Pre-requisites, or Placement Scores Below What is Required
Department of Mathematics, College of Charleston
Adopted: April 12, 2006
Mathematics is one of the largest departments on campus, teaching 3000-3500 students in a typical semester. We happily advise and assist students registering for MATH courses. We're most able to help those students who plan ahead and who see us when they realize they need help. We encourage students to register for MATH courses in the earliest semester that they're academically ready, pre-register as soon as they are able, and pay their bill on time to avoid losing their schedule. Regardless of the situation, though, students who need advice or assistance with MATH course placement or registration are encouraged to come see us.
Pre-requisite Overrides
If a student is unable to register for a MATH course on Cougar Trail due to a placement or pre-requisite issue, then that student should file a placement / pre-requisite override request with the Department of Mathematics. The Associate Chair will review that request and make a decision. If the request is declined or the Associate Chair needs additional information to make a decision, the Department of Mathematics will attempt to contact the student. If the request is approved and a seat is available in the requested section, then the student will be registered by someone in the Department of Mathematics. Students needing to switch sections after being granted a pre-requisite override will be unable to switch to another section on their own. They will need to see someone in the department office for assistance.
Closed Course Overrides
When all available slots in a course are taken, the course is ``closed''. Students who want to request registration in a closed MATH course should file a Special Enrollment request with the Department of Mathematics.
Overrides Require Departmental Approval
A faculty member's signature on an override request is not a guarantee that the request will be approved. All overrides require approval of the Department Chair or Associate Chair.
Pre-requisite Overrides for Non-MATH Courses
Some courses taught outside the Department of Mathematics have MATH pre-requisites or co-requisites. Examples are CHEM 111 and DSCI 232. Requests for pre-requisite overrides for non-MATH courses should be filed in the department or school that houses those courses, even if the pre-requisite is a MATH course. Students who need assistance in convincing the ÒhomeÓ department or school that a MATH pre-requisite has been satisfied by alternate math courses are welcome to contact the Department of Mathematics to request such assistance. The Department of Mathematics can process overrides only for MATH courses.
Re-enrollment after Being Dropped for Non-payment
Students who have been dropped from their MATH courses for non-payment of their bill are welcome to re-enroll. If the desired course is closed or if the student needs a pre-requisite override, he or she should follow the procedures listed above. We will make an effort to find seats for students who have lost their course schedules because of non-payment, but we cannot guarantee that we can provide seats in the original sections, that any seat will be available in the course, or that graduation will not be delayed.
