Interpreting Your ALEKS Score

ALEKS Placement Guidelines for Math Courses

ALEKS cutoff scores and placement into math courses at The College of Charleston are provided in the following table. Note that Math 101 does not satisfy the general education requirements in Mathematics.

Students not needing Math 105, Math 111, or Math 120 for their intended major

Students needing Math 105, Math 111, or Math 120 for their intended major

0-29

no placement (remediate in Prep and learning modules to retake ALEKS)

no placement (remediate in Prep and learning modules to retake ALEKS)

30-45

Math 103 or Math 104

Math 104 (if required or recommended for intended major)

Students need to remediate with ALEKS Prep and Learning modules in order to achieve a score high enough to place into Math 101

46-60

Math 101, Math 103 or Math 104

Math 101 or Math 104 (if required or recommended for intended major)
61-75

Math 105

Math 111 also requires one of the following minimum scores in addition to an ALEKS score:

SAT Math Section Score 580, SAT Math Score 560(before March 2016), or ACT Math score of 24

Math 103 or Math 104

Math 105

Math 111 also requires one of the following minimum scores in addition to an ALEKS score:

SAT Math Section Score 580, SAT Math Score 560(before March 2016), or ACT Math score of 24

Math 104 (if required or recommended for intended major)

76-100

Math 120 also requires one of the following minimum scores in addition to an ALEKS score:

SAT Math Section Score 620, SAT Math Score 600(before March 2016), or ACT Math score of 27

Math 105 or Math 111 (see Math 111 guidelines above)

Math 103 or Math 104

Math 120 also requires one of the following minimum scores in addition to an ALEKS score:

SAT Math Section Score 620, SAT Math Score 600(before March 2016), or ACT Math score of 27

Math 105 or Math 111 (see Math 111 guidelines above)

Math 104 (if required or recommended for intended major)

The Mathematics Department has set guidelines for ALEKS scores necessary to place into most introductory level math courses at the College of Charleston. Students are urged to discuss their ALEKS placement score with their advisor before enrolling in a course. Students are strongly advised to remediate with the ALEKS Prep and Learning modules to achieve a desired score.
