Textbook Intro Stats, by DeVeaux, Velleman & Bock, 2nd
edition (Pearson)
Important: Please
try to bring your textbook to class every day.
Important
Dates The last date to
withdraw from the class with a grade of W is Feb. 20. Test dates are Feb. 13 (note date change), March 14, and April 11. For the 9am class the final exam is 8-11am on April 28; for
the 10am class the final exam is 8-11am on April 30. A tentative schedule for the course is given on the back of
this syllabus.
Course Work Homework from the textbook will be assigned at the end
of each class, but will not be collected or graded. Based on this homework, you will be given a short quiz during
each Friday class, except on the test dates mentioned above.
You are encouraged to discuss assignments and compare results with your
classmates. If you do not
understand the assignments, please ask me about it in class, or come to my
office hours for help. Help is also available at the Math Lab in the Learning Center at Addlestone Library. (Hours
of operation will be announced.)
Grading
Policy Your course grade will be based on your work, in the
following proportions: 25%
quizzes, 15% for each test, and 30% for the final exam. Some degree of
subjectivity in grading is inevitable in any course; bearing this in mind, a
course grade of 62% or more ensures a D, 70% ensures a C, 80% ensures a B, and
90% an A. Grades may be modified
by a plus or minus.
Attendance
Policy and Makeups Each student, whether present or not, is responsible for
all information disseminated in the course. Five or more unexcused absences
from class may result in a grade of WA.
(See p.18 of the Undergraduate Catalog for more information.) Documented excuses will be accepted
from the Office of Associate Dean of Students (67 George St.). For students who are participating in
College-sponsored events, excuses will be accepted in the form of written
notification of dates when classes will be missed; the faculty or staff member
organizing the event should provide students with this documentation.
No
makeups will be given for missed quizzes or tests. If you miss a quiz due to an
excused absence, the rest of your quizzes will count for more. If you miss a
midterm due to an excused absence, your final exam grade will be used for the
missed test. Without a documented excuse, a missed quiz or midterm will be
counted as zero.
Guidelines for Classroom Conduct (see the Student
Handbook, pp. 49-50)
á Do
not cut classes or come in late.
á Never
leave during class unless you absolutely must (and if you must, do so without
disrupting class). Leaving for a short break and then returning is not
acceptable.
á Turn
off cell phones, pagers and all other
electronic devices.
á It
is rude and unacceptable to talk with classmates while the professor (or
another student who has the floor) is talking.
á Visible
and noisy signs of restlessness are rude as well as disruptive to others.
