Restaurants Near the
Workshop
Charleston has tons of really nice restaurants, including some
extremely
fancy ones. The list below includes the ones closest to the conference,
though not necessarily the best. The numbers refer to the spots
indicated
on the map. (Click on the map for a larger image.)
- Yo Burrito: Big burritos, fajitas, quesadillas,
tacos, with homemade salsa bar.
- Andolini's Pizza: Thin crust pizzas and calzones.
- Sermet's: Slightly upscale restaurant offering
Charleston
cuisine and an atmosphere enhanced through paintings by the
owner.

- Mellow Mushroom: Popular college town pizza chain.
- Chopsticks: Chinese food, very popular among the
college
faculty. Yes, there is seating, but you have to walk around behind the
kitchen to see it.
- Lilies Gourmet Deli: Fresh sandwiches, wraps and
salads for lunch.
- Subway: You know, the famous sub sandwich chain.
- Moe's: Tacos, quesadillas and burritos with
strange names, but
still delicious.
- Bogota's: Coffee.
- Starbuck's: Coffee.
- Port City Java: Coffee.
- Terrace: If the weather is agreeable, you might
want to take the
elevator here up to the Terrace Restaurant that serves pasta fish
and
meats with a rooftop view of the park.
Also at this location: Kim's Express:
Japanese and Korean grill, Korean beef bul-go-gee and bee-bim-pop.
- At the corner of Calhoun and King, inside Millenium Music,
you will find fabulous Five Loaves:
great soups, tasty sandwiches, and salads.
- Papa Zu-zu's: Gyros, hummus and other pita
sandwiches.
- Groucho's: Deli sandwiches SC style.
- Clara's Cafe: Casual sandwiches.
We also strongly recommend the following for those who wish
to travel a
little farther:
- Heading north from Calhoun on King will bring you past
many
restaurants, including three highy recommended ones. Basil
offers
really fine Thai food, but can be crowded during regular meal
hours. On your way up King you'll
pass The Bookstore Cafe on your right. Although it is not
actually
a bookstore, they have good food, especially if you're in the mood for
a
big omelet for brunch. A little further up, you'll find King Fish, serving fresh seafood,
veggie, and pasta dishes. You'll also see Fish on King Street,
which
is a highly recommended restaurant for fine Lowcountry Cuisine.
- Sushi Hiro is a good Japanese restaurant on King
Street right
near the conference site on Liberty. Unfortunately, they are closed
all day
Sunday and Saturday for lunch. So, your only chance to eat there would
be
Saturday night. (There are two other sushi restaurants on East Bay
Street if
you want to go that far.)
- Vickery's is a bar/grille with a Cuban influenced
menu down at
the south end of St. Philip Street.
- For fine (i.e. expensive) tastes, consider Charleston
Grille in the mall down on King Street near Market, Fulton Five
for Northern Italian at 6 Fulton off of King, Circa 1886 in the
Wentworth Mansion at 149 Wentworth Street, Anson
off Market Street, and the always great Carolina's, in the heart of the
historic district at 10 Exchange Street. 35 Rue de Jean and Coast
on John
Street
are great and convenient for people staying at the Francis Marion
Hotel, so is Paolo's Gelato for
that Italian treat that comes in a cone.
- 17W Cafe & Bar
Delicious soup and sandwich combinations.
To get there,
just head north on St. Philip Street a couple of blocks and turn right
on
Warren. The restaurant is about halfway down the block on your right.
- Jestine's (at Meeting and Wentworth) and Hyman's
Seafood
(a few blocks further down on Meeting Street) are local favorites.
Jestine's
serves traditional lowcountry
fare including corn bread, fried green tomatoes and collard greens.
Hyman's serves
very fresh fish, but tends to get crowded with tourists around meal
times.

of great restaurants here if you have time to look!
