Careers of Recent C of C Math Graduates:
|
Job Description:
- The Ross Assistant Professorship is a prestigious position for a recent recipient of a Ph.D. in mathematics. Although called an "assistant professorship", it is more accurately described as a "post-doc", which means that it should be viewed as a temporary position from which Sarah can hopefully move to a tenure track professorship elsewhere.
- In this position, Sarah teaches a single course in three out of OSU's four academic quarters. In addition, she is the organizer of the Math Department's "Ergodic Theory and Probability Seminar" which meets once per week. The rest of her time is spent conducting her own mathematical research with the goal of publishing it in professional journals.
Math on the Job:
- This job is all about mathematics. When she is not teaching calculus to the first year honors engineering students, she is working on her research in mathematical analysis (specifically, in ergodic theory and symbolic dynamics) which brings her to the cutting edge of our mathematical knowledge and contributes to its further development. A broad knowledge in mathematics, skill in being able to communicate and teach mathematics, and the creativity to make novel discoveries are all essential parts of this job. Sarah particularly refers to her experience as a supplemental instructor at C of C and a teaching assistant at UNC in her success as a teacher.
Background:
- 2001: B.S. in mathematics from the College of Charleston
- 2006: Ph.D. in mathematics from UNC-Chapel Hill.
Advice for Current Students:
- "My advice is to get to know your professors and ask them as many questions as possible. No matter what you want to do with your career, your professors have either done it, or know someone who has. The more information you can get about what you want to do, the better."
